IEM.

Objective

Raising awareness among the general public about multiple sclerosis (MS) and how it affects those living with the condition.

Solution

The project involved creating the first computer designed to mimic the effects of multiple sclerosis: the IEM. In collaboration with the tech partner Impossible CP, we built this computer at no cost. It functioned like a standard computer but was constructed with cables that replicated the issues experienced by neurons in individuals with MS. As a result, the IEM exhibited symptoms similar to those experienced by MS patients: a paralyzed mouse, blurred vision, random tool selections when clicking, and more.

To introduce the IEM, an event was held on International Multiple Sclerosis Day. LLYC Foundation volunteers planned and managed the event, developing materials and audiovisual identity for the campaign. Additionally, a website was launched, allowing users to simulate the effects of the IEM from home and learn more about the disease and its symptoms.

Impact

The event garnered live media coverage and a significant number of features in print and digital outlets.

This initiative feels like a gift to my mother, who has been living with this disease. It takes me back to when she first explained her condition to us, using the metaphor of frayed wires that cause short circuits.
