Doors of Hope: Art to raise awareness about violence against the LGBTIQ+ community

Objetive

In the past three years, over 2,000 cases of discrimination and violence targeting the LGBTIQ+ community have been documented in Mexico. Lacking support from their families and close communities, many LGBTIQ+ individuals are forced to leave their homes to be themselves, only to face social barriers that prevent them from achieving a dignified quality of life.

Casa Frida is a shelter dedicated to supporting the LGBTIQ+ community in Mexico and raising awareness about the violence they face. It challenges us to highlight the resilience, courage, and determination of those who have had to leave their homes in Mexico and Latin America—a reality that many people are unfamiliar with.

The organization aimed to spark dialogue about violence against LGBTIQ+ individuals. Simultaneously, they sought to increase donations to fund a new shelter.

Solution

We responded to this challenge with Doors of Hope. This initiative brought together seven members of the LGBTIQ+ community, who found refuge at Casa Frida, and national and international artists. Together, they reinterpreted their stories using doors as canvases—symbolizing those that had been closed to them and the ones opened at Casa Frida. Each story was transformed into a work of art, shedding light on the stark reality of violence against the LGBTIQ+ community in Mexico.

Reimagined as powerful artistic pieces, the doors were showcased at the renowned Hilario Galguera Gallery. The exhibition served a dual purpose: raising awareness and collecting funds to create more safe spaces for LGBTIQ+ individuals in Mexico.

Doors of Hope highlights the resilience, courage, and determination of community members forced to leave their homes, offering an artistic reinterpretation of their journeys.

It is a call for reflection and solidarity with those who have faced immense challenges on their path to authenticity and acceptance.

Doors of Hope helped us connect with the art world and artists who transformed these doors into symbols of resilience. While it was challenging to convey complex stories in a positive way, it was very rewarding to see all the enthusiasm come to life.
